About the department:

The Film and Video Department has two study programs:

  • FILM AND VIDEO Undergraduate (BA) study program – 3 years
    • from 2020, the study changed its name to FILM AND MEDIA ARTS
  • FILM, MEDIA ARTS AND ANIMATION Graduate (MA) study program – 2 years

The Department of Film and Video combines education in the field of film, video and new media. Candidates who have completed high school can apply for the class exam for the Undergraduate (BA) study of Film and Media Arts. A maximum of 10 students are enrolled per year. Bachelor of Film and Media Arts (Baccalaureus/Baccalaurea, BA) acquires basic theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of the moving image and its broader discourse. Teaching areas include practical and theoretical aspects of experimental, documentary and feature film, animation, performance and media installations. Students who have completed their undergraduate studies acquire competences for independent artistic expression in the field of film, video and new media, as well as competences for work in a wide range of audiovisual production and industry.

Candidates with completed BA or MA studies in the field of art, as well as humanities or social sciences, computer science, etc., can apply for the Graduate (MA) study program in Film, Media Art and Animation. Master's/Master's degrees in film, media art and animation ensure highly professional profiles trained for completely independent activity in practices that include moving images and the wider discourse of film art, animated film and media art. The department regularly cooperates with the Croatian Audiovisual Center (HAVC), which monitors and supports the production of student diploma films. After completing their studies, master's degrees are trained to work in culture and art, audiovisual production and industry, examples are RTV centers, production houses, associations and artistic organizations for audiovisual production, film and video studios, museum-gallery institutions, but also independent author's artistic practice.

Classes are held in Croatian and English, and the teachers who work at the Department are renowned artists and cultural workers in the field of film, animation and new media art: Vlado Zrnić, Dan Oki, Sandra Sterle, Toni Meštrović, Veljko Popović, Dinko Božanić, Goran Čače, Jurica Pavičić, Brian Willems, Ivan Perić, Tanja Vrvilo, Silva Kalčić, Paula Jurišić, Đildo Bavčević, Silvana Dunat, Darko Škrobonja, Darko Kokić and others.

The teachers of the Department of Film and Media Arts regularly show their works at film festivals, exhibitions, and in different formats and presentations in the country and the world.

Students of the Department of Film and Media Arts show their works at film festivals, exhibitions, and in various gallery-articulated presentations in the Republic of Croatia, but also abroad. They are the winners of many international and national awards, for example: Tihana Mandušić, Essl – Award CEE 2009, Sunčica Fradelić, Oktavijan for the best debutant at the 14th Days of Croatian Film, Đildo Bavčević, 1 award of the 46th Croatian Film Festival in 2014, Dragan Đokić, 2nd prize of the 46th review of Croatian filmmaking in 2014, Tom Šimundja's "Vedran Šamanović" award in 2010 and others. in 2014

From the Depths (Katrin Novaković) Children's Jury Award for the best film at the Olympia International Film Festival 2014 Nomination for the Mo Award at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival 2014, Bonaca (Still - Josipa Vulić) - won the Grand Prix and the award for the best director of photography at the FUSE Festival in Karlovac 11.-12.5.18, Late Check-Out (Ivan Trpimir Lozić) Eurasia International Film Festival in Astana (Kazakhstan) - won the award for the best student film, Andromeda Film Festival in Istanbul (Turkey) - won the award for the best short film , Zero Degree Film Contest in Punjab (India) – Best Comedy Short of the Season…

The department cooperates with numerous domestic and foreign institutions (Golden Gate Cinema, Art Gallery, UNIART Helsinki and others), and in cooperation with the Multimedia Cultural Center in Split, students continuously realize their artworks in the MKC Gallery. Group exhibitions are designed so that students can confront their gallery-articulated media artworks developed through the teaching process with the real situation of performing and exhibiting the author's work in a public gallery space. The department organizes a competition review of short student films - UMAS Review. Authors of the best student films win the jury's main prize and the audience's prize. The event is held every year at the end of November in cooperation with the Zlatna vrata movie theater, under the leadership of Dink Božanić. At the beginning of each year, the department presents the most successful student works in Kino UMAS as part of the Open Day.

For practical and research work, the department cooperates with various outside entities such as: Kazimir Association, Metonymija Association, Kino Klub Split, Kontejner, Prime Render Studios, etc.

The department is open to student mobility in accordance with the principles of the Bologna process.

The department has signed contracts on ERASMUS exchange of students and professors with the Art Academies in Ghent (Belgium), Braunschweig (Germany), Aix-en-Provence (France), the film academy of the University of Sussex in Brighton, Great Britain, etc. We also cooperate with UBO, Brest France within the framework of the SEA-EU alliance, and UNIART Helsinki. Our students go abroad for one teaching semester if they wish.

Organized by the Department of Film and Media Arts, guest lectures and international workshops are regularly held by renowned authors, artists and professors from other universities.

Guest appearances include: Razvan Radulescu (Romania) Corinna Schnitt (Germany), Catherine David (France), Thomas Elsaesser (Netherlands), Takayuki Yamamoto (Japan), Igor Grubić (Croatia), Paul Davens (Netherlands), Olga Stefan (Switzerland), Lina Džuverović (GB), Geert Lovink (Netherlands), Lev Manovich (USA), Laurent van Lancker (Belgium), Miriam Simun (USA), Ruth Noack (Germany), Isabelle Le Corff (France) and many others.

The Department of Film and Video, in cooperation with the Institute for Network Culture of the University of Amsterdam, organized a conference on the topic of the Internet and moving images, and the exhibition "Video Vortex" in May 2009 at MKC Split. 30 artists and theoreticians from 6 continents participated in this event.

With colleagues from UBO Brest, we are collaborating on the project "Photography and film production in the European port towns and territories. Bodies, Images, Territories. Getting to know each other's environments through art".

Study Programs

Undergraduate Study Program

  • Duration: 6 semesters, 180 ECTS
  • Enrollment requirements: passing the State Graduation Exam (Level B) and passing the entrance examination
  • Title obtained: Bachelor’s Degree in Film and Media Art

Students who have completed their undergraduate studies acquire competences in author's artistic expression in the field of film and new media, as well as competences for work in audiovisual practice and industry. A university bachelor's degree (Baccalaureus/Baccalaurea, BA) in film and media arts acquires basic theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of video, film and digital media. Employment opportunities are in the culture and audiovisual industry, economy, both in social and private companies, but also as independent workers or artists.

Graduate Study Program

  • Duration: 4 semesters, 120 ECTS credits
  • Admission requirements: completed undergraduate studies lasting 6 semesters
  • Acquired title: Master’s Degree in Film, Media Art and Animation

Candidates who have completed an appropriate BA or MA degree in the field of art, but also humanities or social sciences, computer science, etc., can apply for the MA degree in Film, Media Art and Animation. Employment opportunities are in culture and audiovisual industry, examples are RTV centers, art associations and organizations, production houses, film and video studios, museum-gallery institutions, but also as independent workers or artists..
