Multichannel Sound Recording and Spatialization Workshop
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 1:00 PM, the Multichannel Sound Recording and Spatialization Workshop was held in the foyer of the Arts Academy at Gripe Fortress, achieving exceptional artistic and educational results.
The workshop was conceived, organized, and led by prof. art. Toni Meštrović and assist. prof. dr. art. Gildo Bavčević, whose expert guidance enabled participants to engage deeply and intensively with sound, exploring its finest and often imperceptible structures.
At the core of the workshop was an experimental approach to sound recording using contact microphones on an old piano, through which students investigated micro‑vibrations of materials, spatial resonances, and the mechanical gestures of the instrument. The recorded material was subsequently processed and spatialized within a 5.1 surround system, granting the sound a new spatial and perceptual dimension.
Through hands-on practice, participants developed ambient and spatial listening strategies while gaining insight into the fundamentals of multichannel composition, spatial sound design, and the impact of space on auditory perception. A particular strength of the workshop was its inclusive character, as students without previous technical experience were able to participate fully and meaningfully in the creative process.
The workshop resulted in a series of surprisingly mature sound sketches and spatial compositions, as well as a notable increase in student interest in further exploration of experimental sound practices and multichannel formats. The working atmosphere was marked by focus, curiosity, and encouragement, with a strong sense of collective discovery and experimentation.
This workshop reaffirmed the importance of a hands-on, research-oriented approach to sound within contemporary artistic education.
