Lecture on the work of: Jean-Marc Cerino

Lecture on the work of: Jean-Marc Cerino

Venue: UMAS Cinema, Gripe
Time: Wednesday, 06.05.2026 at 11:00-12:00

On Wednesday, May 6, starting at 11:00, a lecture by Jean-Marc Cerino, a French artist and professor, whose work has been dealing with issues of image, memory, perception and historical representation for decades, will be held at the UMAS CINEMA at Gripe Fortress.

Jean-Marc Cerino (1965) is a French painter who uses archival drawings and photographs – often anonymous – in his work, which he does not reproduce, but transforms and reactivates through painting. He is particularly known for his early series To Friends We Missed, based on drawings of deportees from Nazi camps, in which he consciously avoids direct, “clear” images and asks the viewer for an active, slow and conscious act of viewing. In his recent works, he paints on and under glass, using transparency as a way of thinking, creating distance and space between the image, history and the observer.
Cerino regularly exhibits in France and abroad, and in addition to his artistic practice, he also works as a pedagogue at ÉSBA Nîmes.

🕑 The lecture is scheduled to last about 45 minutes, and after the presentation there will be time for questions and discussion, including the possibility of asking questions about his work and the Erasmus exchange with ÉSBA Nîmes (FR).The lecture will be translated from French into Croatian by Assistant Professor Silvana Dunat, PhD.

We invite all students and professors from all departments to join us. The lecture is open to the entire academic community.

The lecture will be documented within the framework of the IDIUP project

The lecture will be recorded by prof. Toni Meštrović.
