Filming a Documentary and Creating an AV Database in Zadar

The exhibition by Sandra Sterle, titled "(Re)inventing the Past, (En)visioning the Future" ("(Iz)mišljanje prošlosti, (za)mišljanje budućnosti"), held at the Rector’s Palace in Zadar from October 15 to December 15, 2026, has been documented as part of the IDIUP project. Throughout this four-year research process, the project involves collecting audiovisual materials for an online database and a future documentary film. The documentation process included interviews with curators Olivija Nițiș and Koraljka Alavanja (Zadar City Museum), as well as with the artist Sandra Sterle, who created the exhibition. The discussions focused on exploring the relationship between performativity, the document, and performance—specifically examining how archival materials are activated through artistic practices, and how the boundaries between documentation, interpretation, and the act of performance are constantly being renegotiated. This exhibition documentation contributes to the creation of the project’s digital archive and serves as a significant component of the research, which will culminate in the production of a documentary film upon the project's conclusion.

Production of a documentary film and database IDIUP_4

As part of the "Production of a documentary film and the IDIUP_4 database" activity, audiovisual recordings and interviews were conducted on September 14, 2026, with Ivan Ramljak—one of Croatia’s most significant documentary filmmakers—Vjeran Pavlinić, a film restorer at the Croatian Film Archive, and Vuk Ćosić, an internationally acclaimed pioneer of internet art and net.art.
The activity focused on gathering material for the IDIUP project’s documentary film and web-based database, placing special emphasis on methods for documenting, archiving, preserving, and interpreting documentary material within the fields of contemporary art, film, and digital culture.
The filming sessions encompassed structured interviews, audiovisual documentation of professional practices, field research, the collection of testimonies regarding archiving and storage methods, and discussions on various models for managing documentation and archival collections. Particular attention was paid to the role of archives in preserving artistic and film heritage, the challenges of digital storage, and the accessibility and presentation of documentation to the general public. Conversations with various interlocutors presented diverse perspectives on documentation and archiving, ranging from film and audiovisual heritage to contemporary digital and internet-based art practices. The activity provided insight into modern strategies for preserving cultural memory and highlighted the importance of systematically collecting and organizing documentation as a foundation for future research and the interpretation of art practices.

The activity was devised and carried out by Prof. Art. Slobodan Jokić (interview and moderation), Full Professor Toni Meštrović (camera), and Asst. Prof. Art. Gildo Bavčević (sound). The collected materials contribute to the development of the IDIUP project's digital database and serve as a valuable research and educational resource for the study of documentation, archival, and artistic practices within contemporary culture and art.
