Announcement of public lectures and workshop: “Digitalization and Tradition: The Art of Scagliola Making”

Within the framework of the institutional research project “ART – WITNESS OF TIME: Preservation of Skills and Revitalization of Traditional Sculptural and Conservation-Restoration Material Processing Techniques through a Contemporary Curriculum – UMAS-USV, IP-UNIST-59”, a series of public lectures and a workshop titled “Digitalization and Tradition: The Art of Scagliola Making” will be held on April 8 and 9, 2026.

The lectures will address the historical and technical development of the technique, as well as issues related to its deterioration and the challenges of conservation and restoration. In addition to a general overview of scagliola, special attention will be given to its presence and frequency in Dalmatia. A detailed analysis will also focus on the painted antependium of the altar of St. Spyridon from the Church of Our Lady of the Belfry in Split, which is believed to have been executed in the scagliola technique.

During the practical part of the program (workshop), an in situ examination, research, and documentation of the antependium will be carried out, with the aim of enabling a more detailed contextual and typological analysis, as well as preparing a proposal for a comprehensive conservation-restoration intervention.

The lectures will take place on April 8 at the Arts Academy in Split (Fausta Vrančića 17a). Guest lecturers include Dr. Vanja Kovačić (Senior Conservator) and Dr. Katharina Fuchs (University of Applied Arts Vienna).

The practical part of the program (workshop) will be held on April 9 at the Church of Our Lady of the Belfry in Split, under the guidance of the guest lecturers and faculty members of the Department of Conservation-Restoration: Associate Professor Nikola Radošević, Senior Lecturer Krešimir Bosnić, and Associate Professor Vinka Marinković.

The lectures are open to the public and free of charge. The practical part of the program (workshop) is intended for fourth-year students of the Arts Academy, University of Split (Department of Conservation-Restoration).
